Your Perquimans County Center for Active Living is waiting for you. The opportunities abound and this is your opportunity to enjoy fitness, fellowship, nutrition, travel adventures and enjoy and share your favorite interests. Upon entering the center, you will be warmly welcomed by staff and members. The center hosts a fitness room with twenty individual fitness equipment choices which includes treadmills, nu-steps and bicycles and many other strengthening and diverse equipment opportunities.
The large open area you will enter provides a meeting place for exercise groups and programs, educational presentations, cooking demonstrations, mixed media art, games which include Canasta, Rummikub, dominoes, Mah-jongg, bridge, and Cribbage. Bring your interests and add to the opportunities others can participate in and enjoy. Also enjoyed in this area are Card Party Days, Talent Celebrations, Progressive Dinners, Socials and more.
Computers are provided in a small intimate setting for member use. Currently, there are four computers available. As you travel past the computer area, a room which is designated for crafts and supplies, nestles a large collection of paints, baskets, large diverse gathering of craft supplies, together with an appealing invitation to explore your creative side, as well as share ideas for others to participate in.
Entertainment
A game room featuring Billiards Pool Tables, Table Tennis Table, Dart Board is tucked in right off the large activity room and all that is needed is for you to come and enjoy the games, the fellowship and for those that are interested, a little competition. Down the main hall awaits seven bookcases filled with a collection of hardcover and paper backs featuring, Gardening, Suspense, Self-Help, Christian/Inspirational, Crime/Mystery and so much more. Members are welcome to bring books, take books and share books.
Study Groups
Small study groups meet in the more intimate setting of our conference room located further down the hall for classes. Some of the classes have been AARP Driver Safety, I-Phone and Bible Study. The large activity room adjacent thereto facilitates our TOPS (Take Off Pounds Sensibly) group, Bingo, Zumba, presentations, Walk with Ease participants as well as other evidence-based classes such as Matter of Balance. At all other times, member may gather for fellowship and member participated projects of interest.
Nutrition
Jenny Coppersmith is serving as Nutrition Manager. Office hours are: 9am - 1pm.
Congregate Meals
Our Congregate Meals are served in our dining room and beginning January 4, will be served Monday through Friday, each day at 11:30am. A local caterer provides our meals and therefore advanced registration is required. Please contact the Nutrition Manager for registration. Once you have become 60 years of age or better, you are welcome to join in this nutrition program facilitated at the center and provided through our Albemarle Area Agency on Aging. Donations are needed, accepted and very much appreciated. Just a reminder that it is only through your generous donations that we are able to keep this program alive. A big thanks to all of you who have been so kind through the years in your giving. This is a much need and wonderful program.
Meals on Wheels
Are you looking for a fun, easy and rewarding way to serve others? Home Delivered Meals Volunteers are the ONLY reason we are able to serve our Perquimans County homebound seniors with meals throughout the week. Volunteers play a key role in providing seniors, not only with a meal, but offer much needed socialization and smiles! Flexible scheduling is available to every volunteer.
Gardening & Outdoors
Gardeners, we have a community garden that invites you to come and join in gardening with other members. Tomatoes, sweet potatoes, cucumbers, squash, herbs, spices, flowers, peas and radishes are just a few of the items grown and shared with center members.
Outdoor games are also available at the center and include, Bocce, Cornhole, Croquet, Shuffleboard and Horseshoes. Members may meet and play on their own and outdoor game days are calendared as well as individual game times are established.
Exercise Equipment
Please check with your health care provider, before starting any exercise routines. A large variety of Equipment is available and includes: Treadmills, bicycles, and Nu-Steps. Fitness room with equipment is available Monday through Friday from 8:30 am - 4:30 pm.
Additional Activities
Members have the opportunity to join adventures for day trips, overnight tour and travel, movies, shopping, shows, festivals, dinners, museums, zip-lining, canoeing, fishing, line dancing, Tai ‘CHI, Chair Yoga, choir participation, Zumba, Yarn Corner, Bingo and educational presentations. Pianos are available for all to share their musical gifts with others.

The center is located at 1072 Harvey Point Road in Hertford, NC and membership is free and available for all independent active Perquimans County Residents age 50 and better. The center is open Monday through Friday 8am through 5pm with activities beginning at 8:30am and concluding at 4:30pm. Call us today or come by to enjoy this great opportunity provided for you.
Miscellaneous Information
- Registration for monthly shopping trips are available the first day of each month. Registration for all events is requested to provide the opportunity for your participation.
- Perquimans County has a special needs registry in case of a disaster. If you, or someone you know is eligible, applications may be found at the county webpage: www.perquimanscountync.gov. Look for Emergency Notification Registration and choose “CODE RED.” Center staff will also be available to assist you with a paper registration form.
- The Perquimans Weekly & Daily Advance are available at the center.
- TVs are located in the center in the main activity area and the fitness room.
- Frequently, wheelchairs, motorized wheelchair, walkers, potty seats/chairs are available to lend to members as needed.
